31 May, 1985. It is a red-letter day in the history of Tamil cinema. Director Sridhar, man behind the ever-lasting classic Kadhalikka Neramillai, was back to show why he was a celebrated filmmaker. His Thendralae Ennai Thodu starring Mohan and Jayashree was out. Interestingly there was nothing new in the story nor was there was a suprirse in the form of twists and turns in it. Still the romantic story went on to make it big. A major credit for the success goes to one man – Maestro Ilayaraja.
The everlasting melodies that Ilayaraja came up for the movie was the backbone for its success. The songs Thendral Vandhu, Kanmani Nee, Pudhiya Poovithu besides peppy songs Ennanga Maapilla, Kavithai Paadu and Emma Anthi Mayakama were chartbusters. The movie has a huge star cast that included Y G Mahendran, Thengai Srinivasan, Gandhimathi, Venniradai Moorthy, A R Srinivasan and Typist Gopu. Cinematography was by Ashok Kumar, editing by B Lenin and V T Vijayan. It was about one man and two girls. A sequence of cat and mouse game involving Raghu (Mohan) ends well.
Thendralae Ennai Thodu won Mohan the tag of romantic hero and it set a platform for him for him to render similar movies that went on to become huge hits.
